Our History

Girlguiding, the leading charity for girls and young women in the United Kingdom, has a rich and storied history that dates back over a century. The organization was founded in 1910 by Robert Baden-Powell and his sister Agnes Baden-Powell. Inspired by the success of the Boy Scout movement, they established the Girl Guides, which later became known as Girlguiding.

The early years of Girlguiding saw rapid growth, with girls across the country embracing the movement’s ethos of self-reliance, outdoor activities, and community service. Guiding activities were designed to provide girls with practical skills, instill values of independence and teamwork, and promote a sense of social responsibility.

During World War I, Girlguiding played a vital role by contributing to the war effort through activities such as knitting, fundraising, and supporting their communities. After the war, the movement continued to expand and adapt to the changing needs of girls and young women.

In 1969, the various Girl Guide organizations in the UK merged to form a single entity, Girlguiding UK. This unity allowed for greater coordination and the sharing of resources, leading to further growth and impact.

Over the years, Girlguiding has evolved to address contemporary issues and provide girls with a platform to express themselves, develop their skills, and become leaders in their communities. Today, Girlguiding UK remains a vibrant and inclusive organization, offering a wide range of activities, from camping and outdoor adventures to STEM projects and advocacy on social justice issues.

Throughout its history, Girlguiding UK has empowered millions of girls and young women, fostering their personal growth and enabling them to make a positive difference in the world. The organization’s commitment to empowering girls and promoting equality and diversity continues to shape its mission and activities as it looks towards the future.
